National urban health mission (NUHM),was approved on may 1st ,2013 as a sub mission of the national health mission (NHM) to address the needs of the urban population with the focus on urban poor ,by making available to them essential services.
NUHM was established in Sikkim in2014 with the operationalization of urban primary health center UPHC ,at Gangtok.On April 2021,UPHC - HWC at Ranipool was established under NUHM with a new infrastructure development and human resource strengthening. Since then UPHC -HWC Ranipool has been providing essential package of services along with COVID 19 related activities to their population.
Thus , at present under NUHM, there are 2 UPHCs functioning at Gangtok&Ranipool. There are 6 Urban Health Posts under UPHC Gangtok which are presently functioning from rented rooms.
Essential services envisaged under NUHM like Reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health services, Family planning andcontraceptive services, General outpatient care for acute simple illnesses, Screening prevention and management of non communicable diseases and Screening and basic management of mental health issues, Basic essential laboratory facilities, Capacity building ,trainings under various programs, IEC activities at community level are being conducted through UPHC,Gangtok.
In addition, to the above mentioned essential services , COVID 19 related activities as RAT testing and RTPCR sample collection and COVID 19 vaccination along with HPV vaccination is being carried out at UPHC Gangtok.
